Outback-Day Four

The landscape became semi-desert and very flat, giving us a view of this beautiful area for miles. We arrived at Coober Pedy. A mining town which produces 70% of the world's opal. We were shown underground mines and homes as temperatures can reach beyond 40 celcius! Coober Pedy means White Man's Burrow after the Aboriginees saw the white man desperately burrowing for his fortune. We had the opportunity to dig for opal but no luck! We slept in a bunkhouse that had been
converted in an old mine.

Early morning and the flies are out- even brushing my teeth was a struggle and a few flies were consumed.

William's Creek-a busy place!

Hi Becca and Steve,
Sorry we haven't been in touch for a while. The outback tour looks really good. Hope you made it safely to Japan. We're in Melbourne (we've been here for 1 week and have another to go). We've rented a room in a beautiful Victorian house in St Kilda, where they filmed one of my favourite series, The Secret Life of Us. I really like Melbourne and could easily live here. Hope you're well. Love, Sandra & Paul
